My affinity with Jow Gar started back in 1993. I enrolled in college and joined the lion dance troupe. I had always been fascinated by lion dancing since young but never got the chance to join due to parental objections.
The troupe was initially taught by Elite, a member of the Jow Gar sect in Singapore. They eventually handed over the school to another Jow Gar troupe, Sembawang CC. The coach then was Pan Guangyang. He was very knowledgeable and I learnt a lot. What struck me deeply till today, was he was able to explain the mechanics behind the movements. Be it martial arts or liondance, he was well versed.
Unfortunately I decided to move on via the Polytechnic route and could not continue after the short 3mths there due to the long distance from my home. I kept in contact with coach Pan for a while before losing contact. I managed to catch up with him a few years ago but we lost touch again. Eventually I returned to the Singapore HQ (after 14years, Jow Gar never got out of my head somehow), and formally went under Master Lee (son of Grand Master Lee).
I started making some videos for our annual ancestor remembrance ceremonies back in 2008, and in 2011, that video had a hit of a few hundred thousands! I then got into a job that required heavy travelling and started wondering about the international Jow Gar network. Perhaps I was getting older and started to appreciate culture and history more.
This blog, is a dedication to the many Jow Gar family members all over the globe. I hope, that the sect would be revived (took a movie series for Wing Chun to resurrect) and hopefully, we can have our own movie one day.
