China Tangxia Ancestor Remembrance Day 2015 中国中外周家总馆祭祖

It was another one of those “have to do” thing in my life. That is to attend the annual commemoration ceremony of the founders of Jow Ga in Tangxia Town of the Jiangmen City, Guangdong Province. It was a 1.5hr bus ride from Guangzhou Baiyun airport and thanks to the wonderful folks Jie and Liang from HQ, they provided much needed local transport to the location. I was able to cover the event single handed with their innovative travel means (Riding on a motorbike without a helmet with a drone on one hand and camera bags on the other up a bumpy dirt tracks was pretty fun I must say)

It was emotionally overwhelming when I arrived at Mt Jow Lung. I have seen photos of it but never had the chance to visit. It was larger than I imagined and the grandeur could only be documented from the sky. The tomb was built in 2001 but still very well maintained. It was a long walk in there and the area was limited. It was heartening to see almost 900 young and old troopers pay their respects. The variety of lions and even styles varied. Not to mention the awesome 100m firecracker which is prohibited from where I come from.

When the ceremony was done, it was time to party. 900 of us packed in a large school hall, dining as we watched various troops performed non stop for almost 2 hours. It was great to see great camaraderie between our China troupes. I wish that Jow Gar channel through our videos, would extend our unity beyond China.

Enjoy..
