This is a rare photo of Jow Biu and some of his disciples. It was probably taken back in China. The shorter gentleman in gray, is Shizu Jow Biu, while the tallest behind is Shifu Lau Ho Leong (Founder of Vietnam Yun Yee Tong). On the right of Shizu Jow 周彪 Biu is Shifu Lee Ngau 李牛 followed by Shifu Chan Man Cheung 陈万祥 and lastly Shifu Lv Zhushi 吕柱石.

There are many others who are not identified in this photo. It appears that GM Jow Biu had many more disciples but it there are few who are still actively involved. If you know them, drop us a mail. We are looking for info on Shifu Mak Chan Keng 麥展晴.

One thing we noted, is the background is that of a chinese medical shop. It could be true that Jow Ga also had our own chiropractice?!

Updated Feb 16: We got to know some more of GM Jow Biu’s disciples which we are still verifying their lineage. Hopefully one day we get fully reconnect everyone.

  1. Hello. Been reading your blog and wanted to let you know that our Sifu Professor Wong Kit Po here in Perth Western Australia is a direct disciple of Jow Biu,
He started learning with Jow Biu as a young boy in HK up until he was about 15 years old when Jow Biu died. Roughly about 10 years. Sifu has photos of him as a young boy at the school including the uniform worn.
Thought you might be interested from an historically accurate point of view.
    Regards,
    Shaun

  2. My master, GM Sing Ming Li says he was the last disciple of GM Jow Biu. GM Jow Biu was retired and was no longer teaching, but because my master’s mother was a wealthy and famous herbalist he took my master as his disciple. Master Jow Biu would even take him around to other masters of other styles that were friends of his and ask them to teach master Li advances forms.
He finished his studies under master Li Ngau. As a result master Li knows no less than 60 forms. Some are rare and some he has promised not to teach to others.
He retired this year. Our school is called Wu Do Kan. We are located in Montreal, Canada. Master Li opened the school in 1972.

    1. Hello Joey,
Our Sifu Wong Kit Po started learning from Sigung Jow Bui around 1951 at about 5 years old as his uncle and father were both friends and students of Sigung Jow Bui. Would your Sifu be one of our Sifu’s Sihengs? I know Grandmaster Chan Man Cheung was about 22 at the time and one of our Sifu’s Sihengs, so depending on age it is possible. We are lucky enough that Sifu is still teaching and running our school; Wong’s Academy of Chinese Martial Arts here in Perth, Western Australia. It is good to hear that another Jow Gar school is still going strong with so many years under its belt.
I’ve only been doing Jow Gar for about 25 years, but I know the senior most student has been doing it for over 40 years with Sifu. He has a far better knowledge of the history as he is much closer to Sifu and started with him -when Sifu hadn’t officially opened a school and was merely teaching only a small group. I’m sure that there is a good chance that they know each other, or at the very least heard of each other. I’ll definitely will have to ask.
All the best with your training and thanks for adding a little bit more to my knowledge of the different chapters to Jow Gar.

      1. When master Li opened the school I could swear I heard his partners name was Kit. Could it be the same man? He left after several years. Master Li just turned 85 I believe.

  3. Master Li was a student of Master Jow Bui in the early ‘50’s . He started teaching in Montreal in the late 60’s and opened up Wu Do Kan in September of 72 . He retired about 5 years ago. The responsibility of carrying on the school is upon my shoulders. I became a disciple of Master Li on October 4, 1973 and continue to teach the way I was trained. I still see my Master as frequently as I can and he is still involved behind the scenes in guiding my way on the path he started.
